Termination of Parental Rights

This is a legal process whereby a Court can terminate and forever sever a parent’s rights to children. State law requires that certain prerequisites (factors) occur before a petition/complaint can be filed with the Court.

Once granted by the Court, children are no longer recognized as a child of that parent, and the parent is no longer recognized as a father or mother to the child. Such termination of parental recognition impacts inheritance rights, the requirement for the support of the child, and certain benefits. .
